Pepsin is an endopeptidase that breaks down dietary proteins reaching the stomach into amino acids. Pepsin functions by digesting peptide bonds, the predominant chemical bonds found in proteins. Pepsin plays a role in the pathophysiology of laryngopharyngeal reflux (LPR).
