强迫游泳实验 (Forced swim test,FST)：其原理主要是让动物被迫在一个局限且无法逃脱的空间游泳，由于啮齿类动物先天对水的厌恶，它们在水中会拼命挣扎游动，并试图逃离水环境，一段时间后，发现逃离无望时动物停止挣扎表现出“行为绝望”状态 ( 在水中停止挣扎逃生，呈漂浮不动状态) 。通过对其漂浮不动状态的时间进行记录，不动时间越长表明抑郁程度越重。
