Glutamatealso known as a neurotransmitter, is the metabolic precursor of γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA), which can be recycled through the tricarboxylic acid cycle to synthesize glutamate. Glutamate is the main excitatory and GABA the main inhibitory neurotransmitter in the mammalian cortex.
