Sphingomyelin synthase (SMS), which comprises of two isozymes, SMS1 and SMS2, is the only enzyme that generates Sphingomyelin (SM) by transferring phosphocholine of phosphatidylcholine to ceramide in mammals.The regulation of ceramide/SM balance by SMS and SMase is responsible for diverse cell functions not only in physiological cells but also in cancer cells.

鞘磷脂合成酶 (SMS) 由两种同工酶 SMS1 和 SMS2 组成，是哺乳动物中唯一通过将磷脂酰胆碱中的磷酸胆碱转移到神经酰胺而产生鞘磷脂 Sphingomyelin (SM) 的酶。SMS 和 SMase 对神经酰胺/SM 平衡的调节不仅在生理细胞中，也在癌细胞中负责多种细胞功能。
