Iron sucrose (0.01 mg/mL) used as an additive to culture medium for 24 h was cytotoxic to human peritoneal mesothelial cells in in vitro culture as reflected by its effect on the cells' growth, viability and synthesis of IL-6; all these effects were dosedependent. At higher, concentrations cytotoxic effects of iron sucrose appeared. Toxic effect of iron towards the mesothelial cells may be linked to increased production of free radicals. Iron sucrose enters into the cytosol of the mesothelial cells, where it is probably transported in a process of endocytosis[1].
