Vitamin U (Methylmethioninesulfonium Chloride, Cabagin-U, Smethylmethionine) is a vitamin found in green vegetables. It is used in the treatment of peptic ulcers, colitis, and gastritis and has an effect on secretory, acid-forming, and enzymatic functions of the intestinal tract.
Vitamin U inhibits adipocyte differentiation via down-regulation of adipogenic factors and up-regulation of AMPK activity[1]. Vitamin U, also known as S-methyl methionine is found to increase activity of S-adenosyl-L-homocysteine. This decreases the inhibition of S-adenosyl-L-homocystein and stimulates methylation process[2].
"vitamin U" is recommended for treating oesophagogastric lesions, chronic gastric ulceration, chronic gastritis, ulcerative colitis, diaphragmatic hernias and peptic ulcers. "Vitamin U" is also recommended as a preventive vitamin for the digestive and intestinal systems. It is found that vitamin U can be used as a donor of methyl groups during bacterial DNA methylation in vivo without changing the specificity of DNA methylation. Vitamin U dose-dependently lowers the increased plasma LDL and normalizes the decreased HDL in dietary-induced hyperlipidemic rats[2].
