Background
Katacalcin is an endogenous peptide (121-141) encoded by the CALCA gene and is expressed in, and secreted from, troid parafollicular cells in humans.1 Unlike calcitonin , a calcium regulating peptide hormone, katacalcin does not affect serum calcium levels. Plasma levels of katacalcin are increased in patients with medullary troid carcinoma.2
