Sarafotoxin S6c is a snake venom-derived toxin and peptide endothelin type B (ETB) receptor agonist. It induces phosphatidyl inositol turnover in rat hippocampal slices, which endogenously express the ETB receptor, with an EC50 value of approximately 10 nM. Sarafotoxin S6c selectively binds to the ETB receptor over the ETA receptor (Kis = 0.023 and 4,200 nM for the rat hippocampal and atrial receptors, respectively). It induces contractions in isolated dog saphenous vein segments and relaxation of isolated rabbit mesenteric artery segments in a concentration-dependent manner. It increases diastolic arterial pressure in pithed rats when administered at doses ranging from 0.01 to 3 nmol/kg.
